With the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X console fast approaching, everyone is speculating if the Xim Apex will be compatible with the next generation of consoles.
The short answer to this question is, we don’t know! Until both consoles are released and tested, all we can do is speculate about what the future for Xim is. Will it work out the box? Will there be a firmware update? Or will there be a Xim 5?
Here’s what we know about each console so far:

XBOX SERIES X
Microsoft have announced in a recent Xbox Wire post that all of your existing officially licensed Xbox One accessories will work on Xbox Series X. “Any officially licensed Xbox One accessory that connects to your console wired or wirelessly via USB will work on Xbox Series X”.
Not only that, the new Xbox Series X controller will also work on the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. With both controllers being forward and backward compatible, there’s a good chance Xim Apex will just work, without the need of an update.

PS5
Things are a little more vague for the PS5 console at this stage. In a recent Playstation Blog post, they told us that many PS4 accessories would be forward compatible with PS5. But, the PS4 Dualshock 4 controller will only work with PS4 supported games and will not work with PS5 games. “We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”
The new DualSense controller is packed with new features like adaptive triggers that can adjust resistance, new haptic feedback and an integrated microphone. Without Dualshock 4 compatibility this makes it a bit of an unknown when it comes to Xim Apex compatibility.

While the news coming from Microsoft is very promising. it’s not enough to give a concrete yes statement at this stage. Less is known about the PS5 and I guess we’ll just have to be patient and wait for it to be released and tested in the Xim lab.
Xim’s preference is to support the next generation of consoles with the current Xim Apex. This will most likely require a firmware update. The Xim 4 is less likely to receive the same update due to it running out of memory for firmware updates. Xim have also said there isn’t another Xim in development, so no plans for a Xim 5 at this point in time. For all things Xim Apex check out the Xim Forum.
